SILVIA: The right lifestyle choices - a long voyage of self-discovery
A "classic" path
How many of us, encouraged by our loved ones, have bowed to their wishes and opted for the “sensible” solution?
Silvia, studies and career debuts
Ever the dutiful daughter, Silvia embarked on the accountancy, economics and business studies expected by her family. But, with hindsight, for her this was far from being a happy choice! After a period spent in the UK under the Erasmus program, Silvia returned to Italy brandishing her degree to join the family business in Bologna: a company manufacturing soles for footwear, where she was in charge of economic matters and pricing.
But Silvia has a three-dimensional personality and, for her own self-fulfillment, needs to be in contact with tangible materials.
Silvia, the artist
Her artistic soul first began to emerge from its chrysalis in 2007, when she signed up for a course in raku, a traditional Japanese form of pottery-making. Raku has a rather disjointed and uneven finish so, while the technique gave Silvia the chance to be in direct contact with raw materials, it failed to fire her imagination. It was only when she discovered the simplicity and purity of porcelain that she was finally able to give full rein to her creative urges.
It was only when she discovered the simplicity and purity of porcelain that she was finally able to give full rein to her creative urges. It was from this moment that her artistry came into its own, porcelain allowing her to express herself through a variety of different types of sculpture, some now on display in major museums.
Silvia, the craftswoman
The sculptress then alternated with the artisan and, following the closure of the family business, she branched out into tableware, still using porcelain and still keeping to simple but sophisticated lines.
Silvia's creativity reached its peak when she began to apply the slab technique, commonly used for refractory materials, to porcelain, a far more infrequent practice.
Harnessing her technical and artistic skills
Silvia's true nature is, in fact, a harmonious combination, the fusion of two apparently irreconcilable qualities, one technical, the other artistic. She found her true vocation by using slab techniques, which resonate with the scientific and structured thinking forged by her studies, with a sophisticated and artistic material such as porcelain.
The culmination of a long voyage
Silvia’s voyage of self-discovery and self-perception may have taken some time but today she is fully conscious of who and what she really is. She can now freely exploit her talents and remain true to herself, thanks to her own tailor-made project, made to measure and fitting her like a second skin.
Stay safe!
